The bulkhead work is progressing, but it is slow work. You can see what has been done this week based on where the snow is on the wale, What's the wale? That is the heavy wood beam on the outside of the bulkhead. It is attached to existing structure embedded deep in the ground behind the bulkhead to hold everything in place.

The dredging has begun!

I have often wondered how they knew when they had everything the same depth. In this case, about eight feet at low water. Notice the marks on the bucket...........

The yellow marks are the operators reference. Here he is dragging the open bucket around at the desired final depth looking for high spots. When the bucket drags, he takes a few scoops until it doesn't hit anything.

The wake is from the bucket moving, not the water current.

The bucket is coming up with a large piece of old dockage.

Going to the barge with a load of muck.

Lifting the "spuds" to move the barge. These anchor the barge in position while they work.

The tug has moved the crane closer to the bulkhead and the "spud" is being lowered again.

Much closer!

The fitting around the spud is used to lift it. It is held up by a locking mechanism at the deck level while the barge is being moved.
