High School Sailing
If you are an established high school sailing team or a high school-aged student with the desire to sail please contact the Sailing Director at hamptonycsailing@gmail.com to help set up your high school sailing practices. High School sailing is organized based on the number of sailors at your school to constitute a full or a partial team. Either way, we can make you better and we are happy to help you navigate this easy process to excel on the water.
Despite COVID attempting to quash all high school sports, the Virginia Interscholastic Sailing Association is able to press forward with hosting double-handed competition with strict parameters to help prevent the spread of COVID. When the decision was made that a “high school” format was going to be held, HYC coaches were approached by several teams to help aid in sailor development.
Hampton Yacht Club partnered with local neighbor Youth Sailing Virginia, Inc. YSV provided charter boats that would allow HYC coaches to push forward at a great venue. YSV is also a venue for VISA competition, which means that HYC-coached teams are able to practice on the very waters that they will compete in for roughly half of their regattas over the season.
Many HYC members have deep ties to Youth Sailing Virginia and the club is very pleased to have reached this agreement to meet the goals of both programs of putting kids on the water and growing the sport that we all love!
Visa History
Known as Virginia Interscholastic Sailing Association, VISA has helped local high schools organize highly competitive regattas in the spring and fall. These teams are also a part of Mid-Atlantic Sailing (MASSA) and compete with 54 member high schools from Virginia north to New York. Many of the schools award letters for the sport, which provides a high level of support for their team. Usually a season consists of six regattas, with the fall season beginning in September through October and the spring season beginning in March through May.
