Visiting the club for an upcoming regatta

Here's what you need to know:

Launching and Dockage

Wet Sailed: HYC offers Bellingham floating docks for visiting yachts.  Coordinating dockage on a T-head or slip can be arranged through completing the Visiting Dockage form above or contacting the Sailing Director.

Dry Sailed: HYC offers up to 5T capability for hoist launching larger dry sailed one design or cruising keel boats (such as Viper 640, Melges, 24, and Hampton One Designs).  These vessels may be berthed on land during the regatta within the Dry Storage area, North Lot, West Lot and depending on availability may be stored at HYC after the event if pre arranged by contacting the Sailing Director.  Classes required to remain in the water during regattas will be rafted on the north side of E dock and available T-heads.  See campus layout for location of the 5T, 2T, and 1T hoists.

Racing

The racing venue is in Hampton Roads. The starting area is typically about a 1 1/2 mile sail from the clubhouse in an area known as Hampton Flats, historic waters crossed by John Smith and the founding of Jamestown to the naval battle between the Monitor and Virginia on March 9, 1862, also known as the Battle of the Ironclads. Typical race conditions are 6-12 knots from the southwest and currents, generally under 1 1/2 knots.  Click here for more local knowledge.

Parking

Ample parking is available for most regatta events; however, racers should be prepared to follow the instructions of regatta organizers upon arrival. Specific instructions for separating cars and boats, storing trailers after launch, and parking non-member cars will be provided and strictly enforced. Beware of overhead power lines when entering or exiting the parking lots.

Spectating

The club does not have a boat ramp for launching spectator boats. Public boat ramps with easy access to the racing venue include:  Sunset Boat Ramp and Anderson Park / Peterson Yacht Basin. Spectators on land may enjoy the view from the Monitor-Merrimac Overlook at Anderson Park, or anywhere along Chesapeake Avenue in Hampton.
