Hampton Yacht Club is the premier yacht club on the southern Chesapeake Bay for sailboat racing, featuring keelboats, one design, and junior racing. 

 

HYC offers several annual events, including for keelboats Southern Bay Race Week (largest regatta on the southern Chesapeake Bay), The Down the Bay Race (72 years),  Hampton Sprints, and the HYC Annual Middle Ground Light Race.  Annual events for One Design classes include the Spring and Fall Fling Regattas, the HYC Annual One Design Regatta which spans nearly a century, and the newly sanctioned  HYC Annual Hospice One Design Regatta.

 

 Over the years Hampton Yacht Club has hosted many National, North American,  and World Championships, including, the J-111 Worlds, Ida Lewis Women’s US Sailing Championship, and the USODA Optimist Nationals. And, the Hampton One Design Class has been active at HYC since 1934, the HOD having been selected by HYC specifically for sailing in the southern Chesapeake Bay.

STARTING TIME:   Staggered starts, beginning at 1300. (Fastest boat starts last!) See below.

 

INSTRUCTIONS:  The start time for each yacht will be posted at the registration table in the HYC lounge.  Starting times are established by applying a PHRF handicap allowance (CR) plus a Non-Spin credit (if applicable). Boats with Non-Spinnaker credits may fly double-headsails if they choose. Starting on-time is the sole responsibility of the skipper.  Time signals will be announced on VHF-72 at 1255 and again at 1300.  Boats starting prematurely will be hailed via VHF-72 and required to restart. No Flag “X” will be displayed. After starting, racing is boat-for-boat (first to finish wins!).  The RC will record and post the order of finish. To relieve congestion and facilitate identification of premature starters, a yacht may not maneuver within 100 yards of the starting line until 4 minutes before its starting time.

 

CLASSES:  All boats must meet PHRF of the Chesapeake Near Shore Safety and Equipment Requirements and have a current, valid PHRF  certificate. Crew limits do not apply.

 

START/FINISH LINE:  Between orange flag on HYC dock and blue painted rock on opposite shore.

 

COURSE: CCV Harbor Marks A(s), E(s), D(s), B(p), A(s).  (8.0 nautical miles) Drop Mark "D" will be located at approx. 36°59.00'N, 76°22.65'W. Mark will be removed at 1600.

TIME LIMIT:  First boat must finish before 1630. Boats not finished by 1700 will be scored DNF.

 

PROTESTS:   Due:  In writing within one hour after the last boat finishes.

                       Heard: At 1900 hours on Monday, Dec 5, at HYC, unless heard earlier by mutual agreement.

 

AWARDS:  Awards for PHRF A, B, and C per CCV Race Instructions, plus the annual spittoon for the first PHRF boat in will be presented at the  HYC Annual Awards Night on Tuesday, December 6.

CLASSES AND RATINGS:  All PHRF boats must have a current, valid PHRF certificate. Cruising Class boats will be assigned courtesy ratings by the race committee. All boats, including Cruising, must meet PHRF of the Chesapeake Category Near Shore Safety and Equipment Requirements. Crew sailing boats without lifelines must wear life jackets.  PHRF Crew limitations will not apply.

 

COURSES:  As per CCV General Sailing Instructions.

 

 

STARTING LINE:    Between the staff displaying an orange flag on the RC Signal Boat and CCV Harbor Mark “H” (R N “20”) off Hampton Flats.

 

FINISH LINE:   Between the staff displaying a blue flag on the RC Finish Boat and the nearby mark designated by The posted course, unless the course has been shortened.

 

TIME LIMIT:  Any boat not finished within 3 ½ hours of its fleet’s start will be scored DNF.

 

PROTESTS:  Protests will be heard at HYC at 1900 on Monday, unless heard earlier by mutual agreement.

 

SCORING:  RRS Appendix A, Low Point System applies except that:

                        A. There will be no throw-out, and

                        B. RRS A5.2 is replaced by the following:

    “A boat that came to the starting area but did not start, did not finish, retired after finishing, or was disqualified Shall be scored points for the             finishing place one more than the number of boats that came to the starting area. A boat that did not come to the starting area shall be scored         points for the finishing place two more than the number of boats that came to the starting area.”

 

AWARDS:  Daily awards will be presented in the HYC lounge following each race. Series awards will be presented at the Hampton Yacht Club                           Annual Awards Night in December.

 

This series counts toward the HYC CUP Championship.

Sonars

HYC has a fleet of 6 club-owned and maintained Sonars. These 23-foot day racers are very stable keelboats that are perfect for a new sailor who is learning the ropes or for the experienced match racer. They are available for members to check out for a regatta or for a fun sail.
