Y'all come racing!

The signature event of southern Chesapeake Bay racing is hosted every year by Hampton Yacht Club. The event happens the weekend following the Memorial Day holiday and the weekend before Norfolk HarborFest. Opening night, Skippers Meeting, and welcome party are planned for the Thursday of SBRW weekend and the racing, socializing, awards presentations, entertainment, food and drink, and friendship are continuous Friday through late Sunday afternoon.

SBRW really does have something for everyone. Keelboats race in the PHRF Class, One Design Classes, and Cruising Classes. Courses feature drop mark courses and the SBRW open course racing in the bay.  Racers compete in three different venues – in Hampton Roads harbor, in the Bay off Buckroe, and in the Bay off Ocean View. Variety is the spice of life and of Southern Bay Race Week.

HYC and our famous southern hospitality are recognized by all attending SBRW as a key player in the success of the event. Visitors from near and far are treated as cherished friends from the minute they begin the entry process to when they head for home. There is complimentary rafting, trailer storage, launch and retrieval from HYC hoists, a special reduced rate at the local downtown, waterfront hotel, and an entry fee discount for SBRW returnees.

More than 100 HYC volunteers come together to prepare for and carryout SBRW.  There are drink pourers, entertainment procurers, food planners and preparers, volunteer organizers, greeters, welcome bag stuffers, banner hangers, vendor site organizers, and the outstanding and experienced race committee members who make the racing format and administration the best on the southern Bay and beyond.
