Learn to Sail

Hampton Yacht Club Adult Sailing offers learn to sail classes for its membership only. Our US Sailing Level I Basic Keelboat class will introduce you to the basic concepts of sailing on our fleet of Sonars.

Upon completion of the course, you will receive a US Sailing Basic Keelboat certification! Classes generally run from Saturday to Sunday on various weekends from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. or weekdays from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., during the months of April to August.

The Adult Sailing Program offers two types of learn to sail classes:

  • Basic Keelboat Level I teaches adults the basics of sailing: parts of the boat, points of sail, tacking/jibing, sail trim, knots, helmsmanship, rules of the road, and person in the water.

  • Upon completion, students receive a US Sailing Basic Keelboat Certification!

  • Basic Keelboat Level II teaches adults finer points on sail trim, sail controls, and how to sail with a spinnaker.

  • Annual Pig Pickin'.

  • PRIVATE LESSONS: Our knowledgeable and friendly staff are always willing to work with you individually or in a smaller intimate group, please contact the Sailing Director to help you accomplish your sailing goals: whatever they may be!

Classes are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis as there is limited space available.

Students are expected to wear proper sailing attire, non-marking shoes, and a PFD (USCG Approved Life Jacket). This course is hands-on with more time spent on the water and less time spent in the classroom. It is expected that you read over the US Sailing Keelboat book before coming to class and we will hit different points of the book throughout the weekend. Once you register for your Level I class, the Sailing Director will get you your own US Sailing Basic Keelboat book.
